Welcome to this week’s Hardscape Digest, a free bi-weekly newsletter from the team at Hardscape Magazine.
Each issue will cover the latest trends and news impacting the hardscape industry, featured projects, installation techniques, new tools, upcoming events and much, much more.
The bottom line up front
Mixed materials & high contrast: The "one-material-fits-all" approach is out. In 2026, texture and contrast are key selling points. Designs are weaving multiple tones into the same patio, pairing cobblestone edging with sleek modern pavers, and using natural stone transitions to break up large expanses of flatwork.
Treating hardscape as living infrastructure: For commercial and high-end residential jobs, safety and durability are becoming revenue centers. Contractors are spec'ing washed stone bases (so joints don't heave), structural soil (so tree roots don't lift slabs and create trip hazards), and integrating smart, full cut-off LED lighting to improve safety without causing light pollution or glare.
Stormwater management as a feature: Drainage is no longer an afterthought—it’s being integrated as a core design feature. We are seeing a massive push for bioswales, rain gardens, and specifically, permeable pavers. These systems address municipal stormwater management requirements while taking pressure off aging local drainage systems during heavy rains. Similarly, decorative dry creek beds are replacing standard buried downspouts, turning a functional necessity into a visual asset.
