Welcome to this week’s Hardscape Digest, a free bi-weekly newsletter from the team at Hardscape Magazine.
Each issue will cover the latest trends and news impacting the hardscape industry, featured projects, installation techniques, new tools, upcoming events and much, much more.
The bottom line up front
Entries open for HNA 2026 awards: Entries are now open for the 2026 HNA Awards, recognizing outstanding hardscape projects across residential and commercial categories throughout North America. The awards program celebrates excellence in design, craftsmanship, and innovation, with submissions being accepted through August 5. Checkout our post of the 2025 winners here.
"Four-Season" bioclimatic structures: There is a rising demand for bioclimatic pergolas and pavilions equipped with motorized louvers, integrated LED lighting, drop-down screens, and heaters. These structures allow a single space to be used year-round, regardless of the weather.
CMHA courses at HNA: The Concrete Masonry & Hardscapes Association (CMHA) announced that their highly sought-after Installer Courses will return to Hardscape North America this October 20-21. These sessions are led by veteran instructors and offer industry-recognized credentials.
The battery-powered shift reaches heavy tools: With strict gas-powered landscaping equipment bans now actively in effect in major markets (like San Francisco's total ban that took effect January 1, 2026), manufacturers are rapidly rolling out heavy-duty battery alternatives.
